GOLDFINGER | The Movie That Made James Bond
Goldfinger is the James Bond movie that defined the series and cemented Sean Connery as James Bond 007. This Goldfinger video essay explores the making of Goldfinger, and analyses how this movie took James Bond from being a popular British spy series into a global cinematic sensation. Because Goldfinger is more than a James Bond movie - it is THE James Bond movie, and 60 years after it was made it continues to have an impact on cinema and popular culture.

Yeah, but you have to admire how Bond’s devastating masculine prowess cured Pussy of her sexual confusion, and changed her character into one of the good guys. 1964. I miss those days of historical normalcy, before the perversions of a very tiny minority became mainstream and spearheaded the movements which led to the degeneracy of our culture.

We have grown up in an era where we see great works of literature adapted into plays and movies. We have grown so accustomed to this phenomena that we forget that literature unfolds in our minds and is somewhat individualistic as our inner visualizations are unique. Storylines in books and novels are full of details and nuances that ultimately are nearly impossible to translate into a film storyline structure. A filmmaker is in a constant struggle to adapt the written story into a format that the modern movie audience will find not only palatable but also new and engaging and attractive. Such is the dilemma of a movie maker. I would agree that the literary Bond was very boring as compared to his cinematic avatar. Fleming's Bond was a killing machine who dulled the horrific experiences he witnessed as an assassin with the finest indulgences of promiscuity, high stakes gambling, drugs, alcohol, expensive food, automobiles and bespoke clothing. It didn't work. Fleming's Bond was regularly having feelings of regret and anxiety and self doubt regarding his past exploits. This doesn't translate well into a modern cinematic character in an adventure/escapist movie. Liberties and exceptions are taken and storylines are smoothed over and edited into plots that moviegoers can understand and engage in. The Goldfinger story had to be adapted into a scenario that would be relevant to mid 60s audiences. It went from a high wire modern train robbery/extortion/nerve gas caper (as portrayed in the novel) into a nuclear bomb ego maniac who dreams of being the perfect criminal. Combine that with the swinging 60s, Cold War era anxiety and the desire to escape our everyday drudgery in the darkness of a movie theater and you have a recipe for success. Sean Connery, Ken Adams futuristic sets and perhaps the greatest theme song in movie history makes for an ICONIC film. Yeah, it is the best Bond.

I couldn't disagree more about the scenes set in Kentucky. For one thing the background score kept the process of eliminating Solo moving right along. The bailing of his body inside that car further illustrated Goldfinger's conscienceless villainy.

One of the things that makes LOTR look so good and feel so immersive is the minimal use of CGI and the abundant use of real locations like this, real costumes etc.. Obviously for things like Gollum and the Balrog etc. they have to use CGI... But compared to something like Star Wars -- if this was post 1980s Star Wars that entire landscape would just be a greenscreen, despite real places like this existing. LOTR has such a realistic, cozy feel of a real world because of the care that went into its very real sets like this. Again (not to keep bashing SW) but movies like the SW prequel trilogy can look like such a mismatch with live action characters surrounded by everything else green screen. Like Blues Clues, when it is very obvious the human is real but everything else is animated... then the SW Sequel Trilogy -- same issue except to compensate and make the live action characters blend in better with the CGI, they use this very unrealistic lighting in every scene to sort of CGI-ify the characters and make it all blend together. LOTR could stick with real lighting in scenes like Rohan and it adds to the realistic, immersive feel.

Yes, Spy certainly did reignite the Bond box office success, but it's hardly original. Spy is a remake of You Only Live Twice. Instead of kidnapped space capsules, it's kidnapped submarines, the villain (Blofeld/Stromberg) wants to start a war between two super powers to create new world otder, Bond teams up with a female foreign agent (Aki & Kissy/Anya), Q delivers on location a gadget filled vehicle with last name Nellie, long battle sequence inside the villain's lair or adjacent lair, final fight with large formidable henchman (Hans/Jaws), romantic ending on the sea interrupted by M, etc. Many of the same elemsnts are repeated in Tomorrow Never Dies which, in my opinion, is the better remake with villain wanting to start WW3 for high tv ratings for his new cable news station; brilliant! In my opinion, For Your Eyes Only is Moore's best Bond. It thankfully returned Bond back to earth and back to the original Ian Fleming source material. As far as originality and Best Bond film, my choice remains OHMSS, probably the best adaptation of any Fleming novel.

When judging Bond films and their relative importance to the EON franchise, one must consider the producers’ intent. Once spy gadgets were introduced by way of Goldfinger, pretty much any semblance of realism was lost as the series came up with increasingly silly contraptions. Roger Moore’s outings, while they had their serious moments, were campy. For overall approximating realism, there have been perhaps four outings: From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, For Your Eyes Only, and Casino Royale.

Oppenheimer is unwatchable. I've tried multiple times but I find it infuriating. 1. Characters appear without introduction 2. The editing is nauseatingly fast like scrolling through Tik-Tok 3. There are a ridiculously large number of locations which makes me feel lost 4. Why do we need to keep following everyone walking around? Stand still! 5. The dialogue is too quite, out of context nonsense 6. The music is too loud 7. The scenes in New Mexico have so much wind noise in the microphone, it sounds like an amateur student film 8. We never get a break from dialogue. It's a movie not a radio play so "show don't tell". 9. And is it too much to ask for a movie to start at the beginning and conclude at the end? I have a head ache.
